Verizon: Evolving Energy Networks

Jim Gowen, SVP, Global Sourcing & Supply Chain & Chief Sustainability Officer

Open with music/footage of chips and electric circuitry

JIM: If you look at the advent of AI, the amount of energy we need to run our networks every single day is growing so quickly.

JIM: The energy networks that got us to here, they will not get us going forward to where we need to be.

JIM: We have to continue to evolve, protecting our customers and our communities.

JIM: At Verizon, being prepared is just in our DNA.

JIM: We need to be looking at solutions that green the grid. Because that's just how we are going to survive as a society.

JIM: We’ve found partners like Wells Fargo who share our values and can operate at the scale of Verizon that get us to that next level.

MATT: You can't really separate this idea of technology innovation and then making this world a greener and better place. This transition has to happen and it’s about: How do we make this happen in the most efficient and effective way?

MATT: When we got that call, it really wasn't about this deal in 2023, but it's: How do we work with Verizon over the next 5, 10, 15 years to help them achieve their objectives on the corporate side but also on the sustainability side?

JIM: Since 2019, we've issued six $1 billion green bonds for those funds, and helped finance 27 REPAs all around the United States, which could generate more than 3.6 gigawatts of renewable energy.

TITLE CARD: Verizon’s Renewable Energy Purchase Agreements (REPAs); Map of U.S. with Texas, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, New York, Maryland, North Carolina, and Oklahoma highlighted. Added data to show 83 MW in Nebraska, 72 MW in Iowa, 102 MW in Illinois, 89 MW in Indiana, 104 MW in Ohio, 46 MW in Oklahoma, 55 MW in North Carolina; colored bars in each state show Texas is the largest generator with Illinois and Ohio also leading the way for a total of 3.6 GW.

JIM: To stand in front of a large turbine. To see 70 football fields’ worth of solar farms. It’s really been an outstanding journey. Where we work green and live green.

MATT: It's going to take big players like a Wells Fargo or a Verizon to step up and say, “I'm setting the example.” It means making the world the more sustainable place.

JIM: People count on Verizon. We count on our partners, like Wells Fargo, to be there with us.
